![]() TIP: Animation Overiders (AO) use lots of scripts. So all this nice advertising on how many sits your ship has is only useful when you are parked, not when sailing □ Sailing with more than 2 avatars is very risky, go slow, it helps. If you invite a friend on-board, check his or her script rate first (right click the avatar), if its >50, then sailing will probably lead to many crashes. Best is to wear a script counter so you can always easily see how heavy your script load is (cost is one script). FireStorm viewer has an excellent radar built in, so you don’t really need to wear an extra one. ![]() Radar equipment to see who is nearby is also loaded with scripts and constantly listening for new information. Remove those scripts after you made a copy of course. Notorious script hogs are resizers in shoes, boots and hair. During sailing lag is usually not an issue since there are few textures to download and few avatars around. Note: this sim crossing problem is NOT the same as lag, although lag can also have a negative effect on sailing. So to minimize crashes its pays to wear as few scripts as possible, and of course buy a boat that is optimized for sim crossings. If you re-log fast enough and quickly ask for a TelePort, you may be in time to salvage them, but its a race against the clock… This results in an odd situation in which the boat and avatars keep moving without a captain, so no one controls the boat any longer. Note: a funny situation may arise if you as captain fail to properly cross, while the rest of the crew and boat does. If it takes too long or fails, you slowly sail or fly away into never-never-land, and re-log is the only option left. But in reality your boat is stuck on the region border, waiting until all the script transfer from server to server is done. That is because your viewer conveniently assumes you still moving in the same direction and speed, so it projects that assumption on your screen (its called rubber banding). The transfer from one server to another shows often when a boat is seemingly crossing a region border and then suddenly is pulled back, often with a burst of wake particles (foam). Look at your minimap to see when you are nearing a region border. So the more scripts, the more work, the more chances things go wrong. Every time you cross into another region the server of that new region needs to mount all the scripts that are attached to you, the boat and your on-board friends. Sailing means crossing regions or sims (simulators) as they are often called. (switch on transparency) Keeping scripts low – avoid sim crashings Often HUDS end up outside the screen or are rotated and almost invisible, this way you can correct it. TIP: if you mount any HUD on your screen you can move it around as if its a prim by simply editing and moving it. Also my own testing never proved any significant difference between a hud and gestures. My boat designer sources told me that this is not true. Rumour says that using so called gestures, which is basically a key-command to initiate a more complex key-command, is faster than a HUD. if you are a bit handy with building you can easily change and extend the command HUD by adding extra prims and commands. Some designers like Rubber Bunny supply third party solutions for the Bandits and other boats. Boats like the bandits IF and 60 have way too many chat commands and therefore a good HUD is a better solution. In my mind chat commands are for this reason not a very good option. ![]() ![]() No HUD needed, but you need to memorize the commands and find time to type them while you are sailing. A HUD also takes away real estate from your screen and it adds to your script weight.Īn alternative way to control your boat is using chat commands. Some builders even require you to wear the hud before you can rezz the boat. Disadvantages are you always need to have the HUD on, which is an extra action you need to take before you can sail. Advantages are clear, since you can simply push a few buttons to activate stuff. Boats are no exception, so many designers use HUDS to control their boat. HUDS are a popular way to integrate control from the avatar with the rest of SL. I have only good experience with the Firestorm viewer and very little with the original LL one which I consider suitable for beginners and not so much for sailors. In no particular order I discuss here a number of aspects which in my opinion should be considered. When sailing in SL your SL viewer plays a vital role as a means to control the ship and your navigation.
